Consultation on Future of the Institute (March-June 2010)

Consultation on the future of the Bridport Literary and Scientific Institute

Public consultation, March 2010

Following the High Court Order to allow six months for the BADT to put itself in a position to take on the Literary and Scientific Institute, the Trust initiated a number of consultation meetings, to investigate possible future uses for the building, culminating in an open meeting in Bridport Town Hall in late June 2010. Out of these consultations a multipurpose proposal evolved, incorporating a discovery centre based on the industrial heritage of the building, its fundamental community function and its close relationship to the local rope and net industry and its educational traditions, cafe, serviced workspace and multi-function meeting space.  The Trust decided to develop a major funding bid to the Heritage Lottery to support these plans, and to seek the support of the local authorities for the project.
